Volleyball Stats Glossary
Plain-English definitions of the stats tracked in VolleyTag. Click any term for a full explanation with examples.
Hitting Efficiency
(Kills − Errors) ÷ Total Attempts. The NCAA standard for measuring attack effectiveness.
Kill Percentage
Kills ÷ Total Attempts — measures raw finishing rate without penalising errors. Compare with hitting efficiency.
Kill
An attack that directly wins the point — either lands in bounds or forces an error from the opponent.
Attack Error
An attack that directly loses the point — hits out of bounds, goes into the net, or is blocked for a point.
Pass Quality
A 0–3 score rating how well a reception sets up the setter. 3 is perfect, 0 means the ball is out of play.
Reception
The first contact used to handle the opponent's serve. Scored Q0–Q3 based on how many options the setter has.
Serve Ace
A serve that directly wins the point without a playable reception. Tracked in serve efficiency calculations.
Serve Error
A serve that directly loses the point — out, net, or foot fault. Target < 10% of serves at competitive level.
Dig
A defensive save that keeps the ball in play after an attack. Dig % = Digs ÷ (Digs + Dig Errors).
Block
A net deflection of the opponent's attack. Measured in blocks per set; middle blockers typically lead teams.
Side-Out
When the receiving team wins the rally and earns the serve. Side-out % measures receive-to-point conversion.
Libero
Back-row defensive specialist in a contrasting jersey. Cannot attack above net height. Tracked by dig % and pass quality.
Setter
The second-contact specialist who delivers sets to attackers. Tracked by assists and setting efficiency.
Rotation
The clockwise shift of all six players when your team earns the serve. Six rotations cycle per set.
